H038 THIN-LAYERED BASALT: IMPLICATIONS FOR SEISMIC IMAGING Abstract 1 In this paper we use synthetic modelling to study the effect of a succession of basalt flows on the seismic wave and in particular attempt to find a link between the response in the frequency domain and the thickness and velocity distribution of the basalt sequence. Results indicate that in general low-frequency energy is the most efficient at penetrating the basalt but that in some cases higher frequency energy can pass through.
