Spatial aliasing along the offset axis within common-midpoint (CMP) gathers occurs for portions of data in most seismic surveys. As a result, the image quality from prestack migration techniques can suffer, especially in shallow portions of sections where velocity is typically low and moveout is large. This problem can be mitigated by applying linear moveout (LMO) to CMP gathers prior to doing the migration. Doing so amounts to distorting the coordinate frame in which the wave equation must be solved and, therefore, requires a modification to the migration algorithm.
