Abstract

The carbon isotopic composition of the total organic matter in shales from Gomo Member of the Candeias Formation, Recencavo Basin, was analysed in three wells located in the Northeastern part of the basin. The 129 samples performed showed o13C values between -25 and -31 0/00, The isotopic composition of 68% of them was however in a narrower range from -27 to -290/00, which is compatible with the lacustrine origin of the Gomo Member and with the isotopic composition of the petroleum of the basin. The unexpected lSC rich organic matter was usually close to sandstone deposited by turbidity currents, which must have influenced- its isotopic composition. In addition, the carbon isotopic analysis of the organic matter, allowed set up stratigraphic correlation between the studied wells.
