Abstract

Typically recovery is only 20 to 30% of discovered oil and gas (Figure 1). The gap between recovered or recoverable and unrecoverable oil is emerging as an important target for additional oil. A major cause for this gap is the heterogeneous distribution of the key recovery properties in reservoirs: penneabiJity, pore pressure, saturation and compressibility. Seismic 3D and crosswell are emerging as the dominant methods to obtain. To interpret seismic measurements to characterize reservoir heterogeneities and recovery a broader understanding of the relation between seismic properties of rocks and the relevant reservoir properties is needed (Figure 2).
