Abstract

In policrystaline quartz rocks preferred orientation develops as a result of geometric and crystallographic selection during crystallisation. It is well known that the growth rates of single quartz crystals along the polar axes are distinguished (for example, + [2110] and - [2110] directions). Therefore, if the orientations of origin grains and their interactions because the preferred' growth of crystallites in assembly along the polar directions then the volume fraction of grain which growth in positive direction will be predominate over the grains which growth in negative one. This situation is observed in the case of statistical equality of grains whose positive and negative directions align on the grouth direction.
