Abstract
In Australia, water authorities now engage in proactive programs for pipeline asset management to reduce the impact of sewer and water pipeline failure. Consequently, pipeline conditions and failure mechanisms are relatively well known in Australia. Most of the critical service lines involve large diameter ductile or cast iron materials, which are susceptible to surface corrosion. Although factors controlling corrosion rates for these materials are well established, major failures continue to occur in an unexpected fashion and well in advance of the predicted lifetime.
