Abstract
A closed RCRA landfill undergoing post-closure monitoring was located between a large river and industrial facility continuously operating production wells. A significant sand and gravel aquifer was being monitored at three depth levels with four monitoring wells at each level. The presumption was that groundwater flow was toward the production wells and away from the river. However, from manual well gauging conducted during semi-annual monitoring events, it was discovered that at times it appeared that groundwater flow reversed direction and flowed away from the production wells and toward the river.
