Abstract

Fractures in earth formations are a primary source of seismic anisotropy. Anisotropy measurement thus
provides a means of fracture characterization. Using physical modeling and field results, this study
demonstrates the feasibility of fracture measurements using a monopole sonic logging tool. The method is
based on the properties of wave propagation in an anisotropic medium. This paper presents a method of
determining shear wave anisotropic parameters from monopole source-receiver systems.
