Abstract

Using cathodic protection (CP) electric field for estimating the conditions of oil tank hydroinsulation
is considered. A SP-CP (self-potential - cathodic protection) technique is suggested to locate the places of
hydroinsulation breaches. A value of CP local electric current is introduced to characterize the degree of
corrosion risk of oil tank bottom. Laboratory physical modeling of the technique is discussed and practical
example of successful SP-CP technique application for classifying oil tanks into categories of corrosion risk
is delivered.
