Case Study of High-Density Third Generation High- Performance Water Based Drilling Fluids Application

Abstract
This paper presents a case study on ‘Third Generation High performance Water Based Drilling Fluid System’ application to drilling of a high pressure oil well. Recently drilled well was the highest pressurized one in the Black Sea region. Last two sections were drilled around 17 ppg drilling mud. The fluid system was not designed to be an HPHT system at the planning stage of the well, however unexpected sudden kicks has forced water based mud system to its limits in terms of density. The authors will give details about the design, fluid formulation, field trial, drilling and fluid performance.
