Abstract

E-24 SIMULATING WAVE PROPAGATION USING A DISCRETE ELEMENT METHOD Abstract 1 We present results from simulation of acoustic wave propagation and calculation of wave velocities in granular media using a discrete element method. The discrete elements mimic grains in uncemented and cemented granular media. P-waves and S-waves propagating along different directions at different stress conditions are simulated within the numerical model. The results of the numerical modeling are compared with experiments. The stress dependency and stress-induced anisotropy of the wave velocities are governed primarily by the nonlinearity of the grain contact law by the change in effective coordination number with
