Abstract
Groundwater in India is not only a major source of freshwater for drinking but also an important source of water for agricultural and industrial sector. The demand for ground water has increased over the years resulting in over-exploitation and over-stressing of aquifers in many parts of India For our study we have selected Chas and Chandankiari blocks in Bokaro district, located in Eastern state of Jharkhand, India for monitoring the impact on aquifer system by over-extraction of groundwater for irrigation during the period 2007-2008. We have adopted advanced 2-pass Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (D-InSAR) technique using C-band Envisat ASAR images of time period 2007-2008 and an external DEM for quantification of subsidence occurring yearly and on seasonal time scale. The subsidence rates in these blocks have reached upto 7 cm/ year with mean subsidence rate of 0.9 cm/year. The analysis of pattern of subsidence of these blocks in a Geographic Information System (GIS) has established that the subsidence has resulted from over-exploitation of aquifers resulting in compaction of easily compressible overlying alluvium. The pattern of seasonal versus long-term subsidence can help to prospect and control the spatio-temporal changes in the aquifer system in the future for risk management programs.
