Abstract

s in the theory or implementation of the algorithm. By contrast, exact analytical solutions to the wave equation are free from numerical dispersion and could therefore provide virtually error-free datasets to safely test the accuracy of new theories and algorithms. We present a simple, exact and fast acoustic waveform modelling scheme which uses analytical Green’s functions and the Foldy method of multiple scattering to model direct and scattered wavefields. Its main advantage lies in the fact that, although all orders of scattering interactions are included, numerical dispersion is avoided and can be excluded from the range of possible errors observed in the results, making it an ideal tool when exact synthetic datasets are required.
