Abstract

This paper describes a simple correction to convolutional modelling which accounts for the apparent vertical stretch of dipping reflections. The correction depends on a single parameter – an approximate constant background velocity, and requires that the convolution be carried out in 3D, rather than the more usual vertical 1D operation. The corrected operator can be used in both forward modelling and elastic seismic inversion at little or no additional computational cost, and mitigates artefacts that arise from vertical convolution’s tendency to overestimate the frequency content of dipping events.
