Abstract

The paper describes the comprehensive effort of a multidisciplinary team toward the reservoir characterization and the generation of a high resolution 3D geological model for the Greater Burgan field. The 3D high resolution Geocellular model was completed for Wara, Muddud, and Burgan Reservoirs. It is a major sub-surface modeling milestone supporting the team activities in well planning, simulation, reservoir management and development strategy. Many technologies were applied to the construction of the biggest geological model in KOC. Input coming from the existing data available in which sedimentological, stratigraphical data in terms of depositional environment came up with a representative description of the internal architecture of the reservoir and reflects the level of heterogeneity observed in the field. The integration of newly defined core based rock-types and seismic reservoir characterization from a database of more than 1100 wells allowed to simulate a 3D facies model in connection with facies geobodies and their regional trends.
