Abstract

The modeling operator used most frequently in reverse time migration (RTM) and full-waveform inversion (FWI) is finite-difference (FD) operator. FD is not an ideal forward modeling operator for RTM or FWI. There are three drawbacks: it mixes all wave phenomena together; it can’t describe the model in a sparse way, which is very important for inverse problem; the basis functions used to describe the wave-field by FD operator are the same as that used to describe the model. In order to overcome the defects of FD operator, we need a new modeling operator which can not only get the characteristics of model and wave-field, but describe them in a sparse way. A new modeling operator is presented here, which is based on the ray theory. This operator describes the rays in phase space (PS). The operator yields the amplitude and phase along the ray in PS directly. Phase space beam (PSB) are constructed with these rays, and the wave-field can be created by summing all PSB together. As PSB can model the wave-field efficiently and accurately, it can be used to do Least-Square migration and Wave-form tomography etc.
