Abstract

Curvature seismic attributes serve two purposes: to identify places where fractures are most likely to occur, and to provide enhanced resolution of structural features. For the first purpose they are unrivalled, but for the second purpose they compete with high resolution discontinuity and other structural attributes. It is easy to get the impression from the current literature that, for any purpose, curvature is superior to discontinuity. However, curvature is overrated; for mapping faults and channels, discontinuity proves superior to curvature whether derived from reflection orientations or instantaneous amplitudes. Curvature retains value in revealing fine structural detail, though the significance of this detail remains poorly explored.
