Abstract

Industry practices for creating velocity models have changed rapidly over the past few years. A key example of this in BPs portfolio is from the Caspian, where full waveform inversion has allowed a significant uplift in image quality. In this paper we present a case study of the evolution of the velocity model over part of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field, and how this has led to improvements in image quality and subsurface event positioning. Particular emphasis is given to the recent uplift provided by anisotropic full waveform inversion (FWI).
