Abstract

The Khewra Sandstone of Early Cambrian age was well investigated in Khewra and Nilawahan Gorges of Salt Range, Pakistan. It can be classified into four facies associations such as thick bedded, medium grained sandstone, medium to thick cross bedded sandstone, medium planer bedded fine grained sandstone and thin to medium bedded silty- sandstone. Their average composition (QFL, 90:5:3) classifies it as a quartz arenite. The quartz is mainly mono-crystalline with more common Orthoclase and less common Plagioclase feldspar. The rock fragments of igneous origin show its source belongs to Aravalli and Milani Ranges, which were formed as a result of super Plume in Pre-Cambrian. Major cement present is silica however hematite is also common. Ripple marks, planer cross bedding and channels shows its deposition in shallow marine environment most probably deltaic to meandering river.
