Abstract

The northern offshore margin of the Australian continent has been explored for more than 50 years, yielding moderate quantities of oil, but revealing itself to be a world-class gas province. Since the early 1970’s, most of the giant gas fields have been discovered subcropping the regional Callovian unconformity. Most recent exploration has targeted undrilled parts of existing basins, with little or no well control, searching for deeper Triassic channel plays with fault and intraformational seals.
