Abstract
Biomarker distribution in saturate fraction of source rock extracts of shales and marls from Sardar formation has been analyzed to determine organic matter source and depositional environment in the Shotori range, Central Iran. For this, biomarker concentrations and preparative ratios have been measured from two m/z 191 and m/z 217 mass chromatograms and relevant gas chromatograms.According to biomarker data the Sardar Formation was deposited under oxic to sub-oxic, paralic to shallow marine conditions with little to relatively high terrigenous organic matter input. It seems that the depth of basin during deposition of this formation increase from south (Hoze-Dorah) to north (Bagh-Vang) areas. Sedimentological and stratigraphical evidences confirm these results, while Rock-Eval pyrolysis data suggests highly oxidized terrigenous environment with type IV and III kerogen for Sardar Formation
