The Neogene geodynamics of the Mediterranean Sea is shaped by two major subduction zones,
i.e., the Apennines-Maghrebides arc (AM) in the western side, and the Dinarides-Hellenides-Cyprus
arc (DH) in the eastern side. The two orogens migrated respectively ‘eastward’ and
“southwestward”. The subduction zones digested branches of Tethys and related Mesozoic passive
continental margins.
