Abstract

The Mediterranean region is populated by two sets of orogenic systems: (1) those that
are made up of topographically high mountains that appear to have directly accommodated
the continuing convergence of Africa and Eurasia, and (2) those that are made up of
topographically low mountains that do not accommodate Africa-Eurasia convergence directly.
The latter are characterized by regional-scale extension within the upper plate and typically
propagate at high angles to the direction of Europe-Africa convergence.
