Abstract

As a long time provider of geoscience education, both using a traditional lecture-style and the
more recent hands-on computer-training approach, this is a topic to which I have given much
thought over the years. I have come to the conclusion that each approach, lecture-style and
hands-on, has its own advantages and disadvantages, but that neither should be used to the
exclusion of the other. The geoscientist of today has to be equally well trained in geophysical
theory, exploration fundamentals, and "button-pushing" (i.e. getting the software tools to
work). This is a tall order and cannot be addressed by simply using one mode of education.
Before describing my suggested approach, let me discuss the advantages and limitations of
each method discussed above.
