Abstract

The latest development of electronics and computer sciences made possible to create special devices to solve special engineering problems. Environmental tasks on inland waters require methods and equipment with low penetration but very high resolution, in many cases less than 1 cm. Because the expression “ultra high resolution” is often used for boomer seismic sections let’s call the VHF seismic method simply sonar. The source, receiver and the data acquisition system was tested systematically on Lake Balaton (Hungary) in connection with the Limnogeologic Project of the Hungarian Geological Institute. Two case histories are presented to show the capabilities of the method in environmental applications.
