Abstract

rth’s surface. It is noteworthy that water pressure in pores seems to have a significant influence on the rate of occurrence of sinkholes. Therefore, it is important to devise a method for monitoring time changes of deformations in a rock mass, which also can be used to assess the degree of straining which has occurred within the rock. Indeed, such a method provides the opportunity to issue warnings that a catastrophic event is likely to occur. If such a forecast can be made early enough, measures can often be taken to avoid the catastrophe. Laboratory measurements were undertaken, which definitely demonstrate that changes of the electrical resistivity of rocks can be used for such purpose.
