Abstract

For surveying the shallow subsurface geophysical methods have to compete with drilling or cone penetration tests. Firstly therefore the acquisition must be fast and reliable. Secondly, the interpretation must be fast as well as easy. Shallow frequency-domain electromagnetic sounding is a promising tool in this respect. Compared to DC-geoelectric sounding it has the advantage of a limited lateral extent of the currents in the subsurface. Therefore the lateral resolution is better and in the interpretation there is less need for time consuming 2-D inversion of the data.
