Abstract

Dumping of the overburden is always a problem in open pit mining. The problem is growing, if the material of the dumps has any features, which are disadvantageous in geotechnical sense. This is the case in the huge brown-coal district of the Lausitz area in the eastern part of Germany. The dumped material mostly consists of sands with granulometric curves, which are all in the range of the area of liquefactability (figure 1).
