A study of a man-made mine tailings pond has been carried out using acoustic profiling techniques. The purpose of the work was to investigate the eitent to which acoustic profiling could provide information concerning the distribution of grain size and the occurrence of differential compaction. The data were acquired digitally using a sampling frequency of 100 kHz and were processed. Examples of migrated sections are presented showing various detailed structures within the sedimented tailings. It is concluded that acoustic profiling can yield a good image of the sedimentary structure of a mine tailings pile and possibly aid the delineation of gram sizes.
