Abstract

Efficient imaging of large volumes using 3-D prestack depth migration usually uses only one traveltime in the Kirchhoff integral. The quality of the image depends on which traveltime branch is selected. We demonstrate that both first-arrival and maximum-amplitude traveltimes have their problems and we propose a new selection criterion that gives improved image quality.
