Abstract

Seaward dipping reflector sequences on volcanic passive margins are known from drilling to originate from thick piles of subaerial basalt flows. Individual flows are typically much thinner than the seismic wavelength; it is therefore not immediately obvious what exactly gives rise to the observed reflections.
