Abstract

The efficient and environmentally compatible mining of lignite in open-cast mines require geotechnical and hydrological assessments. The base for the evaluation is a very precise geological model. The exploration only by drillholes is not sufficient, especially if the layering conditions are influenced by glacigenous displacements. Therefore since more than 20 years geophysical methods, like gravimetry, geoelectrics and seismics are applied successfully. Within the last years exploration data of high quality were achieved by high resolution seismic methods in areas with complicated layering structures in the upper part of the geological section.
