Abstract

The Black Sea Deep Basin is of extensional origin and has evolved quite differently from the surrounding thrust belts. The Late Mesozoic-Tertiary deformations within the folded domains have affected anly the marginal areas of the basin. Thus the stratigraphic record onshore and in the area of the present-day shelf is of very limited use for predicting lithostratigraphic patterns in the deep basin. Recent studies on the geological evolution of the Western Black Sea Basin are largely regional and the detailed depositional history of the present-day outer shelf, slope and basin floor is poorly constrained.
