Abstract

Accurate background velocity estimates are needed for imaging the subsurface via prestack depth migration and are also the required starting point for estimating the impedance contrasts of the earth through full waveform seismic inversion. Therefore successful background velocity estimation is crucial for the processing and interpretation of seismic data and large amounts of human and computer time are dedicated to it. The main goal of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of automatic background velocity estimation in 2D laterally varying media.
