Abstract

As early as 1930, Athy described sediment compaction by an exponential porosity-depth relationship. But depth is a poor indicator for compaction. Nevertheless, this approach is acceptable if the sediment does not develop a pore pressure greater than hydrostatic. Indeed, for a given lithology and at a given depth, the porosity could be very different if the overpressure varies.
