Abstract

Besides factors related to correct amplitude recovery and suitable petrophysical conditions, the success of AVO analysis depends on appropriate amplitude picking. To this end, various picking techniques have been proposed: sample by sample picking of NMO corrected events (Gelfand et al. 1986), picking of the envelope amplitudes (Mazzotti 1990). In addition, Walden (1991), Spratt (1987), Swan (1991), among others, iIlustrated the errors induced in AVO measures by noise, residual move-out, inaccurate statics, etc.. AVO indicators based on the envelope are less affected by these factors but are inevitably distorted by interfering and crossing events such as mode converted reflections and multiples.
