Abstract

Although seismic reflection is good at determining geological structure and possible structural traps for hydrocarbons, it is poor at determining the fluid content, in a reservoir. Well logs show that electrical conductivity can vary enormously within a porous medium, depending on both the porosity and the fluid content. This suggests that electromagnetic (EM) methods, particularly multichannel transient EM (MTEM), should be used as well as seismic methods, and the joint interpretation of seismic and MTEM surveys over the same geology can yield more information.
