Abstract

For the foundation of an earthfill dam and adjacent concrete structures (spillway, intake) extensive rock excavations are required. To plan economical excavation methods, informations on rock quality and conditions along the subsurface of the rock and possible faults or zones of weaknesses are necessary. Refraction seismic is a most suitable and reasonable method for obtaining physical properties of the ground. This is possible by the knowledge of vertical and horizontal p- and s-wave velocity distributions, which will be illustrated by the following example.
