Hydrocarbon traps at great depths rnay be identified by mapping near surface alteration plumes which are present in the sediments overlying the hydrocarbon accumulation. This geochemical phenomenon enables geophysical techniques with penetration depths of a few hundred metres to detect anomalies associated with deeper hydrocarbons.
