Abstract

One of the basic tasks in hydrocarbon prospecting is to investigate the morphology (anticlines, synclines) and internal structure of the basement underlying the clastic sediments. Gravity is applied world-wide to solve this task; the depth to the basement, however, cannot always be determined. With increasing depth in basins of 3-6 km depth the basement structures are getting poorly reflected, in some cases even anticorrelation was found. From telluric and magnetotelluric data a reconnaissance depth map can be constructed in such cases, too which is a cost-effective and rapid way to prepare a seismic survey.
