Abstract
A regular grid is the most popular choice to represent the model space in the tomographic inversion of traveltimes. An advantage of regular sampling is that we can easily estimate the spatial frequencies preserved by the grid, according to the Nyquist theorem. On the other hand, since the shapes of geological structures are often irregular, a relevant mismatch may occur between the grid and the earth features.
