Abstract

Seismic interpretation is usually based on trial and error forward modelling: synthetic travel times and/or synthetic seismograms are calculated for a particular model, and are compared against to field records; The model is modified until a reasonable match of theoretical and field times is achieved. This technique requires a practical and efficient method for calculating synthetic data. The interest in the extraction of fine detail from field seismograms has stimulated the search for numerical modelling procedures which can produce synthetic seismograms for complex subsurface geometries and for arbitrary source to receiver separations.
