Abstract

Development and testing have been completed for an Expert System intended for constructing a geologic model of a natural hydrocarbon formation. The source data consist of seismically generated evidences of the reservoir structure (top and bottom of oil-bearing strata, their pinching out and substitution regions, disturbance surfaces) as well as of borehole data on rock types, stratigraphic identity, reservoir properties, oil saturation, etc. The 3D geologic formation under study is tentatively broken into a large number (1,000,000 and more) of elementary volumes wherein all the properties are assumed to be constant. For each elementary volume, the Expert System reviews the totality of information related thereto, resolves possible inconsistenties, and yields its diagnosis regarding parameter values within a given volume.
