Abstract
A method for extending the economic life of some oil reservoirs is to lower the reservoir pressure at a late stage of waterflooding. This allows some of the solution gas to be produced together with some of the unrecovered mobile oil. The technique is already planned for the Brent field, and screening studies undertaken for the UK Department of Trade and Industry have suggested that the process could be viable in at least ten other reservoirs within the UKCS, with the potential for increasing hydrocarbon recovery by as much as 800 million STB of oil equivalent.
