Abstract
The Balkanides which trend in an east-west direction across Bulgaria are a part of the main Alpine Orogenic belt in Europa. The western limit of the Eastern Balkanides is marked by the Tvarditza fault zone, a major tectonic feature in the region. The southern boundary is defined by the east-west trending Balkan-Back Fault zone and the northern limit is the southern margin of the Moesian plats. To the east the Balkanides change in strike offshore swinging from an east-west to a north west-south east direction. The Balkanides are made up of several tectonic units. From south to north it comprises the overthrusted Balkan zone, the thrust folded Fore-Balkan zone and the folded Peri- Platform zone. Superimposed on the latter two units is the Tertiary Kamchya Depression.
