Abstract

The Timan-Pechora oil and gas bearing basin (fig. 1) is one of the most proliferous in the European part of Russia. The sedimentary cover comprises Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sediments. The main exploratory targets are: Lower Ordovician clastics, Silurian reefs, Lower and Middle Devonian clastics, Upper Devonian reefs and Upper Carboniferous-Lower Permian carbonates. The main source rocks present in the area have been identified in the Devonian (Domanik and Kynov formations). Nevertheless, significant generation potential was recognised also in some Middle Ordovician and Lower Permian formations (Pairazian, 1993).
