Abstract
The present study focuses on the deep structure of the Viking Graben and adjacent areas of the northern North Sea (60-62°N) (Fig. 1), and its implications for the amount, timing and nature of the lithospheric extension. Regional transects have been constructed based on high quality conventional seismic reflection profiles (to 6-7 s twt) and deep seismic reflection profiles (to 15 s twt). Well information have been used for stratigraphic calibration and compilation of seismic velocities for depth conversion. The new and partly reprocessed data make a better documentation of the pre-Jurassic sediment distribution, basement relief and deep fault geometry possible. These observations put important constraints on structural modelling of the crustal transects which are affected by two active stretching events (Permian?-Early Scythian and Late Jurassic-earliest Cretaceous), each followed by thermal cooling.
