Abstract

In this presentation, the theory of how a seismic wave can generate electrical signals at contrasts in permeability and/or fluid chemistry in a sedimentary material will be developed. The central idea is that the seismic wave generates a streaming electrical current that acts as a current source in the macroscopic (averaged over length scales much langer than grain sizes but smaller than wavelengths) Maxwell's equations. This effect will be called the "electroseismic" effect.
