Abstract

Certain problems of modern seismic data processing (e.g ., some aspects of tomographic inversion and prestack migration) require (1) the handling of complex velocity models and (2) calculations for a high density of shotpoints and geophones. Therefore, we require fast algorithms giving basic wavefield information (traveltimes, dip, curvature, amplitudes). Ray-tracing is one such method, which can also investigate individual arrivals from particular parts of a model in contrast to more complete solutions of the wave equation, such as the finite difference method .
