Abstract
Arbitrary lateral changes of thickness and velocity are allowed for. First order discontinuities are assumed as dominant features. Vertical velocity gradients if present should be positive and comparatively small. Topographic irregularity and layer thickness may be of comparable magnitude. The "plane layer and constant velocity"-model is considered inadequate.
